It is tough to make a choice when it comes to choosing between two leaders of the VPN market. That’s why we have decided to create this comparison of ExpressVPN vs. IPVanish. Let’s take a look at their similarities and dig deep into their differences to understand which one is better.
Even though these two providers share the leadership on the VPN market, they’re not that similar. Both work on all popular platforms and offer mobile apps. Both have 24/7 support and provide customers with a quick help. Of course, both don’t keep any logs. And both offer 7-day trial only for mobile apps. Here we’re done with their similarities. So let’s talk about all the differences and single out the winner.
ExpressVPN vs. IPVanish: Compare Prices
We will start with pricing policies since it’s one of the most important things. ExpressVPN’s price tag starts at $6.67, while IPVanish offers a lower rate – $4.12. IPVanish also wins this round with the number of gadgets it allows to connect simultaneously – you can use up to 10 devices. ExpressVPN can be considered more avid. This provider allows using only 3 devices per license.
What about the money-back guarantee? IPVanish gives you only 7 days to decide whether you like the service or not, while ExpressVPN is more liberal with its 30-day money-back guarantee period. However, it doesn’t help this provider win due to higher price and fewer devices per license.
Privacy and Security
Let’s start with the location. ExpressVPN is located on the British Islands far away from all surveillance alliances. So customers of this provider are no doubt safe from being watched over. IPVanish, on the other hand, is based in the US, and we should remember that this country is a member of the Five Eyes alliance. So privacy-concerned users might have some trust issues here.
Both providers follow a strict no-logs policy which saves the situation for IPVanish and have industry-standard 256-bit AES encryption. Even though both providers offer a set of protocols to choose – which is quite common as well – IPVanish wins here. This service allows using a SOCKS5 proxy server. Also, besides SOCKS IPVanish has a broader choice of protocols than ExpressVPN.
We feel like Auto Reconnect, and SOCKS5 features are more useful for security. ExpressVPN has a standard set of tools that you can see in any decent VPN service.
Servers Network and Speed
ExpressVPN offers a high number of servers – over 2000 spread around more than 148 locations. IPVanish is less sophisticated, there are only 1000+ servers and over 60 locations. However, there is information that ExpressVPN uses virtual server locations which means that the server can be located not where it is claimed to be.
As we were testing the speed, each provider offers – our initial speed was 100 Mbps, and we’re located in Europe – we got the following results.
ExpressVPN has incredible speeds. While being connected to the European server, we had 82.84 Mbps for downloading and 52.14 Mbps for uploading with 40 ms ping. The US server offered us 61.23 Mbps for downloading, 32.41 Mbps for uploading and 108 ms ping. These are great results.
IPVanish didn’t fall behind much even though its speeds were a bit lower. The European location had almost the same result as ExpressVPN – 81.97 Mbps for downloading and 45.12 Mbps for uploading. And the US server was significantly slower – 43.71 Mbps for downloading and 23.41 Mbps for uploading.
Torrenting and Streaming
ExpressVPN allows torrenting, and with such high bandwidth, content sharing will be a pleasurable and safe experience. You can also use this provider to unblock shows on streaming services since it works with Netflix, HBO, and other platforms. So you can enjoy the content you like.
IPVanish allows torrenting as well, and with its Auto Reconnect feature the service can offer the highest level of security. This provider doesn’t work with Netflix and HBO, unfortunately. But it still works with Kodi and Amazon TV Firestick. We had no success trying to connect to Popcorn Time with IPVanish.
ExpressVPN vs. IPVanish: Ease of Use
Even though both VPNs have a simple interface for desktop and mobile users, IPVanish is more organized and visually neat. At the same time, it shows more information about connection than ExpressVPN. However, IPVanish takes more time to set up the software – while it needs up to 10 minutes, ExpressVPN is ready to go within 5 minutes.
But you need to spend time setting up just once. So we feel like the usability of the software is more important. The smooth and informative interface of IPVanish definitely beats the one ExpressVPN has, even though it is not bad as well.
ExpressVPN has an excellent customer service offering users a live chat along with the support via email. Clients can address any issue or question they have and get a quick response and extensive help. Unlike many big VPN companies, ExpressVPN doesn’t neglect the importance of high-quality support and cares about customers on every step they take.
On the website, ExpressVPN offers many tutorials with images and videos. So chances are you might solve the issue you have by just reading the needed tutorial. This provider has done a great job assembling all these useful and informative tutorials that answer almost every question the customer might have.
IPVanish doesn’t have a live chat, unfortunately. You can leave the ticket via Zendesk form on the website or write the provider an email. Users can expect a reasonably quick response – support team answers within one hour. Still, it’s not the same as a live chat where you can talk to a human and clarify all the questions you have.
As well as ExpressVPN, IPVanish has a vast library of tutorials where you will most likely find everything you’re interested in. This section is organized neatly and easy to go through. All guides are rather detailed and supported with useful images.
Even though IPVanish was winning price and security wise, we call ExpressVPN a winner. The reasons for this decision are simple. This provider works with streaming services. Let’s be honest, it’s the requirement of most VPN users. Lots of non-US citizens want to watch shows on Netflix and HBO that are available only in the US, and ExpressVPN offers this opportunity.
Of course, IPVanish offers SOCKS5 protocol, but in reality, not many VPN users would get their hands on it. Therefore, ExpressVPN is more suitable for everyday needs like torrenting and streaming due to higher bandwidth and better speeds.
When it comes to prices, ExpressVPN is no doubt more expensive than its competitors. But a lot of people are ready to pay for the ability to access geo-restricted content, especially considering that it is quite hard to find a VPN service that will work with Netflix and other streaming services. So we can justify the high price tag.
Last but not least, the support service. ExpressVPN is ready to help its customers 24/7 in a live mode, and that’s definitely a win. We all are used to things to be almost instant, so waiting for a response to an email seems like something inconvenient. Even if it takes less than an hour to receive the answer. So, sorry, IPVanish.
If we were trying to decide which VPN is better for security needs, IPVanish would’ve won, no doubt. But since we’re choosing the provider for a generic internet user, our choice is ExpressVPN. This service will provide you with all you need and guarantee a smooth and pleasurable experience.
