VyprVPN Overview
Antivirus packages are getting bigger and better every year, but they still can’t provide 100% protection for your device. There’s a “gap” in security that services like VyprVPN are great at covering.
Furthermore, a modern-day VPN features dedicated clients and apps for all the major platforms, can hide your IP, unblock geo-restricted content, and switch between various servers within seconds. We’ll talk about it all in details in our VyprVPN review.
Indeed, VyprVPN is one of the best services on the market. Golden Frog, the owning company, was founded in 1994 and has been in the business for almost 25 years gaining customer trust and respect. This service offers arguably a greatcombination of security, privacy, ease of use and affordability. And, they encourage the potential clients to download VyprVPN for free (take advantage of the 3-day trial) and see it in action. Features
Golden Frog’s mission, as indicated on their websites, is to provide users with security and privacy while enjoying access to an open Internet. Having started the company as a response to illegal tapping into people’s Internet traffic by the NSA within the AT&T network, VyprVPN endeavors to protect our online privacy.
VyprVPN is a great VPN that doesn’t go an ego trip. It follows solid encryption procedures, provides awesome masking and content exploration but without leaning into the heavy-duty, siege-type VPN features, like NordVPN or ProtonVPN do. Overall, it’s a formidable masking tool designed for the regular user who doesn’t need all the extra jumbo.
Let’s go through its features and functionality a bit in detail together to see what’s really up with VyprVPN.

VyprVPN Plans & Pricing
Sadly, there are only two plans to choose from, but the VyprVPN price is quite affordable regardless of your choice. Besides, if you’re not sure this is the best option for you right now, the VyprVPN free 3-day trial will give you enough time to take it for a spin and check out all the basic features. There’s also a 30-day MBG (Money-Back Guarantee).
The Basic Plan offers protection for up to 3 connections. It will grant you the opportunity to enjoy all the core features VyprVPN includes, which are AES-256 encryption, no inbound speed or bandwidth limits, zero-DNS knowledge service, multiple servers all over the world and access to geo-restricted content.
- [$5 a month] 12-months – $60
- [$9.95 a month] 1-month – $9.95
The Premium Plan offers protection for up to 5 connections. In addition to the core features mentioned in the Basic Plan, Premium will introduce the Chameleon Protocol and VyprVPN Cloud to your arsenal which serve as its special features that define its particularity among its other VPN cousins.
- [$6.67 a month] 12-months – $80
- [$12.95 a month] 1-month – $12.95
VyprVPN plans offer a fair pricing. Is VyprVPN expensive? Not really. VyprVPN cost per month may be higher than that of its competitors but you can always go for the annual plan which offers a great price for the features package. At this point, it’s all about what kind of a user you are and which brand appeals to you more.
VyprVPN Trial Version
Unlike in many other VPNs, like ProtonVPN or NordVPN, VyprVPN doesn’t actually offer a separate free trial version. In other words, there’s no “you can try our trial version for 30 days,” etc. You will enjoy the VyprVPN free trial though, but it’ll only last three days.
There’s an ability for you to enjoy a sneak peek of VyprVPN’s features in its trial by downloading it, creating an account and choosing a perspective price plan. The company won’t bill you for the first three days only, which will be your VyprVPn trial version, after which you’ll have to decide whether to cancel your account and subscription or proceed and let it charge the subscription payment.
VyprVPN Free Version
There will be no opportunity to have an extended period of time to make your mind up or to have a VyprVPN free version with limited features to use, like ProtonVPN offers, for example. The company offers solid, understandable, tight but average VPN features and it sells them accordingly, in a straightforward manner.
VyprVPN Money Back
Be sure to stay vigilant and make your mind up quickly while trying the VyprVPN free trial during those first three days because you won’t get any ability to return to money once they’re off. VyprVPN offers a standard 30-day money back guarantee, there is no such thing anymore.
While reading through VyprVPN’s terms and conditions, there is mention of VyprVPN money back. Also, if there are significant crashes or other malperformance, you will be able to contact their support team and forward a refund request.
VyprVPN Payment Methods
The service accepts standard payment methods. VyprVPN includes such payment options like a standard credit or debit card, PayPal and AliPay. Unfortunately, you won’t be able to pay in Bitcoin or other similar currency. VyprVPN doesn’t seem to be a fan of unidentified financial transactions.
Privacy And Security
As one of the leading services on the market, VyprVPN offers industry-leading protection and security to its customers. Based on its security features and privacy policies, VyprVPN , it’s on par with the best VPNs when it comes to safety.
But what about privacy, you might ask? Thanks to all the latest protocols, you can rest assured that your data will always stay private no matter how strong the potential attacks are. That being said, VyprVPN is not a heavy-duty VPN tool. It’s aim is to ensure the privacy and open Internet access to the regular user.
With this Virtual Private Network, your device and data will be protected 24/7, thanks to the industry-standard AES 256-bit encryption and support of the OpenVPN, PPTP, and L2TP/IPSec protocols. OpenVPN is available in 160 and 256 bit. PPTP is limited to 128 but is slightly faster than the 256-bit L2TP/IPSec.
The previous paragraph may be a bit off-putting to somebody who doesn’t really dwell much in the cybersecurity terminology. Put simply: AES-256 is the strongest encryption standard on the market, used by many, including the CIA and FBI. It offers simple encryption that is extremely hard to decrypt.
A quick fact: the 256-bit encryption, AKA the “military protection,” is impenetrable and no hacker was ever able to outsmart it. So, if privacy is important to you, choose OpenVPN and stick with it. This is a relatively new protocol but is supported by pretty much every single VPN in the top-10.
The other features are meant to hide other constituents of your digital imprint, like session time, bandwidth, IP, DNS, WebRTC, and other loose ends that may come up and be detected by programs or intentional seekers. VyprVPN has just enough to mask you in the open Web.
Additionally, it has a NAT firewall (provides an additional layer of defense), 200K IPs to choose from, and company-owned servers, and you’ll see precisely why thousands of people around the globe trust Golden Frog with their security. This feature ensures that unrecognized or suspicious files do not freely enter your device, alerting you to them and offering solutions.
IP & DNS Leaks
DNS and IP leaks are the primary issues that VPNs are preoccupied with, ensuring that none of those happen. VyperVPN protects your DNS to ensure that nobody and nothing is able to spy on your traffic, thereby making it sure that your device cannot be identified.
Leaks are another important issue when talking about VPNs. Therefore, we ran a set of separate tests to check whether there are any leaks with VyprVPN or not. It’s a great result, considering that it’s not the most heavy-duty VPN out there.
After running four separate tests, there were absolutely no leaks with VyprVPN, which puts it on par with the leaders of the industry (ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and PureVPN). The Kill Switch and Chameleon features definitely invested their share in providing no room for ‘leaking.’
Special Features
When it comes to special features, VyprVPN has a trump up its sleeve – the unique Chameleon protocol. Here’s how it works: the protocol scrambles traffic that’s going through OpenVPN, which makes it even harder to “see” that the user is connecting through a VPN. In other words, the Chameleon protocol exists to bypass the other party’s VPN blocking programs.
If you’re a citizen of China or a country with similarly strict online privacy laws, Chameleon might be your best option. VyprVPN is compatible with most popular devices and platforms, including Windows, macOS, iOS, Android, Linux, most browsers and routers.
As of January 2019, Chameleon works flawlessly in Russia, Turkey, Iran, India, and, as mentioned, China. Apart from giving you unrestricted access to the World Wide Web, it also helps with bandwidth throttling and data caps.
The biggest downside: this protocol isn’t available with the Basic plan. You can only get it with the Premium plan.
Another special feature VyprVPN has is the Kill Switch. It’s mentioned as a special feature because not many VPNs on the market have it. The Kill Switch covers a crucial area where your DNS or IP may get leaked: during reconnection. It kills all traffic when your connection drops and does not allow any to seep through until the VPN re-establishes its masking. It’s a must-have feature in terms of securing your online identity.
While ad-blocking and malware blocking isn’t available with VyprVPN, the provider does come with its own, company-owned zero-knowledge DNS service. This puts it on par with “monsters” like ExpressVPN. If you don’t like this approach, you can always switch to something more convenient and direct your traffic through a 3rd-party service.
VyprVPN Logging Policy
Golden Frog has significantly upped their VyprVPN game since the last time we reviewed it, introducing a ‘no logging’ policy into its business practice. While you may think that it’s a marketing hack, trying to lure customers in, the company has all the receipts to prove its claim.
A quick side note: the company had some serious mishaps in this area in the past. Previously, it used to store the timestamp logs and the fake IP VyprVPN assigned you with for a whole month. Although it was no crucial digital imprint data that could immediately identify you, it did put off a lot of customers.
VyprVPN had undergone an independent audit by the Leviathan Security Group a little while ago in 2018, which revealed that the company didn’t store or share any user data. VyprVPN doesn’t store any source or destination IPs, DNS requests, timestamps, session time, history log, traffic, and other data about the user’s experience under the VyprVPN mask.
If you’re new to the ‘no logging’ party, it’s become ‘a thing’ and a marketing advantage for VPNs. You need to be calm and comfortable with sharing your online behavior with the VPN company that is automated and doesn’t observe anything you do while the open Web does.
Based on the executive summary of the said report, VyprVPN doesn’t store any data on the user experience at all. Other companies with ‘no logging’ policies will sometimes store data on crashes, last log-in timestamp and the user ID attached to it. VyprVPN does none of that.
Subsequently, VyprVPN having an independently proved ‘no logging’ policy is a huge advantage over other VPNs on the market. Often times, VPNs will ensure a ‘no logging’ policy but all we are left with is their word and we’re at their mercy. VyprVPN has an audit report by a reputable company to back up its word.
VyprVPN Jurisdiction
Golden Frog’s HQ is located in Switzerland, and that means you’re free from the all-seeing 14-Eyes surveillance alliance. Without getting into much detail, let’s just say that no third parties will ever be able to request your personal data from VyprVPN, simply because they don’t have authority over companies located in Switzerland.
Switzerland does have a sort of an observer status to the 14-eyes but it has no obligations before the alliance whatsoever. The country is internationally known for its high value of privacy, alluring various insanely rich people and companies to its territory thanks to this. Its Swiss jurisdiction adds significantly to VyprVPN’s privacy and security claims.
Performance & Speed
Overall, this provider gives access to 700+ servers in 70 countries and 200K+ IPs. Plus, they own every single server. What does that mean for the average user? More stability, reliability, and better connection speeds. As the code, the hardware, and the team are all “domestic”; everything runs a lot smoother.
Surprisingly enough, there aren’t any extensions for this VPN. But let’s face it – they’re not that important unless you only want your browser to be protected by the Virtual Private Network. On the bright side, every single VyprVPN app and client works great, and that’s one of the biggest achievements of the company.
We were more than impressed by the results of the speed tests our experts ran for the sake of this review. For a VPN, it is vital to provide a decent connection speed. Otherwise, the experience with it will be average at best. You can choose any speed, IP, or DNS tests to see the results for yourself.
That is especially true for users that need to download big files on a daily basis and put connection stability first. Thankfully, you won’t have to worry about that with VyprVPN. It is considered to be one of the fastest services on the market right now. But, there’s a catch: it all depends on your location.
First of all, servers returned the geographical locations that they marketed in the predominant majority of times. Only the farthest locations, like the Maldives, returned Singapore locations but they still provided the marketed ID. Such a step makes sense in order to ensure that your speed isn’t dead.
After several tests, the UK servers were in the 65-70Mbps, the US East Coast was around the same speed dropping to around 50Mbps as you progressed to the West Coast. The standard 70Mbps bandwidth was the control, so these VyprVPN speed results are great.
If you’re in, say, China or Japan, or Australia, your experience won’t be nearly as satisfying as for people living in Europe (especially in the northern countries). Generally speaking, the connection is much slower in Asia, but in the US and the EU, the drop in speed is not as significant (around 30%, which is more than most VPNs can provide).
VyprVPN for Netflix and Streaming
In 2019, geo-restricted content is still a big issue for many international users. In particular, Netflix, the most popular streaming platform of our time, is continuously implementing new restrictions. Most services on the market don’t have a remedy for that.
While VyprVPN is not the best choice, it’s still a solid pick for unblocking Netflix. We opted for nine different US servers to access geo-restricted Netflix content and, surprisingly, VyprVPN was able to bypass Netflix blocks from all of them. That’s some outstanding performance.
It only has one UK server, so we were unsure whether it would work as flawlessly. We attempted to use that server to bypass the BBC iPlayer defenses and VyprVPN successfully got through them. With such results, VyprVPN makes a great option for accessing streaming content.
As mentioned, the drop in speed won’t be significant, and the experience will be quite smooth. Besides, with Chameleon, it will be a lot easier to outmaneuver this platform. The same goes for HBO, Hulu, iPlayer, and others.
True, you will only get this protocol with the Premium package, but let us say that the difference in price will be 1.67 dollars, and it’s well worth it. With Chameleon, VyprVPN automatically becomes one of the best choices for unblocking geo-restricted websites and streaming services.
But what about the popular media players and streaming devices like Kodi, Firestick, and Popcorn time? The better question is – why would you need a VPN for, say, Firestick? The thing is – platforms like Netflix will still be unavailable with these devices unless you change your IP. And that’s when a robust network like VyprVPN comes to aid. You’ll have absolutely no problem with using it on Kodi.
The installation procedure is fast and easy. The same goes for Popcorn Time. However, it’s not perfect. Even though it does have an Android app, VyprVPN is not Firestick-friendly, meaning you’ll have a lot of trouble with installing and running it. IPVanish is an excellent pick for this task.
TOR Compatibility
It seems like VyprVPN isn’t very fond of third-party secret connections. VyprVPN, at present, is not compatible with third-party proxies, including Tor. Consequently, if it is the depth of the dark net that you desire to explore or to engage in questionable online behavior, you might need to explore other options.
And while the simultaneous use of a VPN and this highly secure browser does offer an additional level of security, for most users, it’s not necessary. That’s because the VPN alone is very well capable of protecting their data and devices. Still, it’s worth noting in our review of VyprVPN that the service doesn’t work with TOR.
TOR is available with many other services, including ExpressVPN, NordVPN, and CyberGhost, to name a few. One quick fact: please be advised that while using a Network together with this secure browser will turn your device into a fortress, it will also have a negative effect on the system (performance). So, it’s up to you to decide whether you put speed and performance first or if protection is the #1 concern for you.
VyprVPN for Torrenting
The fact that Golden Frog owns the entire server Network means it can offer decent connections speeds (as we just learned in the “VyprVPN Speed” section). That’s great for the fans of torrents. With no throttling, no data caps, and company-owned servers, you can rest assured that you won’t feel a big difference in the experience with and without the VPN on. While it’s not as fast as, say, CyberGhost or IPVanish or as secure as NordVPN, Golden Frog does offer a great balance between the two.
VyprVPN supports the P2P protocol, which automatically means there will be no throttling. They even say that in the official statement. Still, torrenting isn’t something they endorse in the ToS, even though they do claim that all traffic is treated equally. The speed is great, no logs are stored, encryption is there – VyprVPN is available for torrenting so you can explore that if you need it.
Important note: while this provider won’t put any penalties on you for using a BitTorrent client, your local copyright laws still apply. And, if your account falls under any copyright-related laws and you lose access to this VPN, don’t expect any refunds. So, you can torrent with VyprVPN, but it’s not 100% safe or hassle-free.
VyprVPN for Business
The VyprVPN for Business Plan is another special feature that distinguishes the service from its competitors. It’s aimed at businesses with a diverse, geographically spread-out workforce and frequently travelling employees. VyprVPN Business is designed to shroud all of your internal network from any prying eyes.
In addition to the Premium features, VyprVPN for Business includes security for all designated employees. Your business will be able to securely exchange files, use the internal chat, and cooperate inside and outside your local network. Additionally, it will allow you accessing the necessary local work instruments from wherever you are.
There is also enhanced protection for your business tools if you decide to use them on an insecure public wi-fi network. You will also be able to bypass governmental geo-restrictions and use whatever tools from your business or otherwise if you need them.
You’ll get a personal account manager assigned to your business that will help you with maximizing the output of the VyprVPN for Business and will assist you with anything you may need in terms of its use and performance. It also offers Tier-1 and Tier-2 24/7/365 support. All of your VyprVPN for Business will occur through special Vypr business servers around the world.
There’s the other option, VyprVPN for Business Cloud, where, on top of the mentioned, you’ll get a dedicated IP option. You will also receive an individual dedicated server. Every experience will be fast and easily deployed. Be sure to check the details on VyprVPN for Business here.
Customer Service
This is a very user-friendly, easy-to-use, and intuitive service. Customer support is exceptional, no doubt about that. The staff is professional, friendly and is at your service 24/7. Both Live Chat and Email Support are available. If you’re not ready to wait around, use the Live Chat. Otherwise, the ticketing system works fine and doesn’t take ages to receive a response.
Again, the team is very “tech savvy” and will be able to help you within minutes. On the other hand, if you’ve got a more complex problem, use the Email Support for a detailed, private conversation. You won’t be able to call nobody at VyprVPN, do mind that.
The VyprVPN FAQ page is alright. There, you’ll be able to learn the basics about Virtual Private Networks, how they work, and why you would ever need one. Nonetheless, their knowledge base, as well as their website overall, lacks in detailed, specified information: everything is quite lukewarm and requires some additional explaining.
Devices
As it was already mentioned, VyprVPN is quite versatile and is available for most popular devices. VyprVPN is compatible with Windows, Android, macOS, iOS, Linux, routers, and most popular browsers. Again: VyprVPN doesn’t like third-party proxies, so no Tor compatibility and alike. It also doesn’t have the OnionOver so similar experience within the dark net are out of the question.
VyprVPN doesn’t have browser extensions. Despite constant mentions by the customers about the necessity for the service to develop extensions, it doesn’t seem prudent or worth the hassle. VypVPN works smoothly and doesn’t overload your device so there’s little point in securing only the browsing experience.
VyprVPN for Windows
Nothing extraordinary will happen to you here. Similarly to any other VPN, you’ll have to access the VyprVPN website, click on the ‘Windows’ tab and download the file. Run the downloaded file, ‘Accept’ and ‘Continue’ everything the installer window asks you to and that’s it.
The setup process is the same as everywhere: you’ll register your email (login), establish a password, and you’re in. Everything else is you preference and needs-based. You can choose your Windows and check out the manual setup here.
The VyprVPN Windows client will not be the most minimalistic and aesthetically pleasing experience, frankly speaking. Although it has an understandable interface, it’s somewhat bulky and not very appealing. It represents all the necessary stats and includes the tabs for you to change settings.
No special skills are necessary here, all the tabs have corresponding names, pointing you in the right direction. You’ll be able to choose a region, choose a server, choose an OpenVPN or other protocols, etc. Just enter, open, and go.
VyprVPN for Android
The installation process is the same as with any other app on your Android. Open the Google Play Store, type in “VyprVPN” and click ‘Install.’ The client will download and install the app automatically. Afterwards, follow the standard registration process of setting up your account.
The design of the VyprVPN app is sleek. It will show you your designated location and IP address immediately and will offer accessing different tabs and switches to use VyprVPN’s functions. The servers will be in a list, as well as regions, and you’ll be able to use feature switches to set your VyprVPN the way you need it. You can check out the manual setup link if you need to.
VyprVPN for iOS
Installing any other application on your iOS is the same as with this masking tool. Open your AppStore, type in “VyprVPN” into the search bar, click on the download to initiate downloading and installation. The process will happen automatically, after which you’ll have to register your account and viola!
The interface and overall experience with VyprVPN on iOS will be cousin-like to the one on Android. You will have the respective lists, tabs, and switches to use all of the VyprVPN features you’ve subscribed to. Everything is straightforward, so, most likely, you won’t need any in-depth utilization tutorials. However, you can access the manual setup link if you need to.
VyprVPN Discount & Coupons
The permanent discount VyprVPN offers is related to the pricing plan’s duration: annual plans are cheaper in the end than monthly billing. The company may provide you with a coupon if you had some bad experiences or provide its partners with coupons to lure customers in. Be sure to check with the company’s official Facebook and Twitter accounts and not trust any random coupon out there.
Do we recommend VyprVPN?
Summing up, it is evident that this is an incredibly capable VPN and Golden Frog has been successful in perfecting the original formula with every new update. The VyprVPN Windows 10 client is a God-sent; the rest of the platforms are also fully supported.
Even though the monthly plans are expensive, that doesn’t change the fact that this is an industry-leading service. Especially, considering their new ‘no logging’ policy proved by an external audit. With a strong combination of security tools, server locations in almost every corner of the planet (70 countries in total), and an emphasis on security, this one is a keeper.
And the fact that the servers are self-owned means security and speed will always be a part of your experience with VyprVPN. For unblocking geo-restricted content, torrenting, and using the Internet in countries like China, VyprVPN is a good choice.
VyperVPN is a Swiss-based VPN tool designed for the average customer to enjoy geo-restricted content, safely and securely engage in P2P and feel private while engaging in any browsing they desire. It isn’t the choice for dark net and other online iffy behavior fans, but it’s not marketed as such. VyprVPN is a great choice for the average Internet user who just wants to feel secure, unseen, and do their thing on the Internet without nobody and nothing keeping tabs on them or snooping around.
